Cadence

Overview

Cadence ("we", "us", "our") is a research application that collects movement and sensor data to study gait patterns and support neurological health research. This policy explains what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we protect it.

Data We Collect

Account Information

When you register, we collect your email address to create and authenticate your account. We send a one-time verification code to your email during sign-in.

Health Profile

If you opt in to Cadence+, we ask for demographic and health information including age, sex, height, weight, pre-existing conditions, mobility aids, activity level, and preferred activities. This data is provided voluntarily and requires your explicit consent.

Sensor & Movement Data

During recording sessions, we collect data from your device's accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer at a configurable sampling frequency. This is the core data used for gait analysis research.

Location Data

With your permission, we collect GPS coordinates during recording sessions to calculate distance, pace, and route information. Location data is collected only while you are actively recording. Background location tracking is used solely to maintain GPS recording if the app moves to the background during an active session.

Device Information

We collect basic device metadata (manufacturer, model, operating system version) to contextualize sensor data across different hardware.

How We Use Your Data

To authenticate your account and provide the Cadence service
To conduct gait analysis and neurological health research
To display your session history, statistics, and activity summaries
To improve the accuracy of our analysis algorithms
To respond to support requests you submit through the app

Data Storage & Security

Session data is stored locally on your device and synced to our servers when a network connection is available. Server data is stored in a secure PostgreSQL database. Authentication tokens are stored in your device's secure enclave (iOS Keychain / Android Keystore). We use HTTPS for all data transmission and JWT-based authentication with short-lived access tokens.

Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal data. Anonymized and aggregated research data may be shared with academic research partners. We will never share individually identifiable data without your explicit consent. We may disclose data if required by law or to protect the safety of our users.

Your Rights

You have the right to:

Access the personal data we hold about you
Request correction of inaccurate data
Request deletion of your account and associated data
Withdraw consent for health data collection at any time
Disable location permissions through your device settings

Children's Privacy

Cadence is not intended for anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from minors. If you believe a minor has provided us with data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Material changes will be communicated through the app or via email. Continued use of Cadence after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
